Dominion of New Zealand steams out of London 16 Apr 2011
Joseph Hoye
One of just five such locomotives in the world, “The Dominion of New Zealand” will be making its maiden trip from King’s Cross station in London on Saturday, 16 April after refurbishment.
To mark the occasion, His Excellency Derek Leask – New Zealand High Commissioner to the UK- will preside over the departure and a donation of £10,000 will be made to the Christchurch Earthquake appeal by Locomotive 60019 Limited, Railway Touring Company, Tower Assurance NZ and the team at Southall Depot in West London.
The event will start at 8:30am. Onlookers, train watchers and well-wishers are welcome but are reminded that King’s Cross is a busy station and that travellers have right-of-way over onlookers. Only those people with a ticket for the maiden journey to Newcastle will be allowed on departure platform 1 but there are plenty of great viewing points around the station.
The steam engine, very similar to world speed record holder the “Mallard”, was one of five A4 Pacific class locos chosen for a special upgrade to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VIII in 1937. The five engines were designated “Coronation Pacific” Class and can be identified as such by special chrome plating and a valance housing the moving parts.
Two of the five engines are now preserved in museums while the other two have been dismantled. The “Dominion of New Zealand” will be based out of the Southall Depot in West London.

I am thrilled to see the conversion of "Bittern" into "Dominion of New Zealand." But it was a shame that the number 2 couldn't have been better executed - what on earth went wrong?"
excellent conversion. Its a Pity the original was not kept for preservation, but we have a large number of preserved A4's, more than any other main line pacific.
