New Zealand picked up wickets at vital times in the vital last power play to restrict Pakistan's scoring and keep its target to level the series at 269 in the fifth One-Day International in Hamilton on Thursday.
Pakistan, who were asked to bat first, scored 268-9.
The key wickets of Misbah-ul-Haq, the tour's dominating batsman, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq and Umar Akmal all fell in the last 10 overs as New Zealand produced a tighter finish than they managed in both Christchurch and Napier.
Ahmed Shehzad led the Pakistan batting charge with a superb maiden century in his eighth ODI. The 19-year-old batted with touches of the old master of Pakistan's cricket, Javed Miandad.
Backing off to leg, and moving all around the crease, he toyed with the New Zealand attack and none moreso than Hamish Bennett who was in danger of putting his neck out as sixes, including two back over his head, were blasted as Shehzad raced to 115. His highest score had been 43 but he passed his 50 from 56 balls and his century came off 101 balls.
A bow to Mecca upon reaching the mark was followed by an upsurge in his already impressive scoring rate but he gave his only chance when not quite middling a ball from Scott Styris and skied a high ball which provided no problems for James Franklin at deep mid-wicket.
Pakistan had looked set for a total of 300-plus but with Shehzad out at 197 and the tour bulwark Misbah-ul-Haq following at 205 two overs later, the prospect diminished. Misbah suffered a relative failure by his tour standards when dismissed for 25.
Mohammad Hafeez, who scored a century two games ago, was caught for 14 at mid-off by Nathan McCullum from Kyle Mills' bowling.
Shehzad then shared a 53-run stand with Kamran Akmal before Kamran ran himself out, setting off for a run and being sent back by Shehzad when backward point fieldsman Mills threw the wicket down with Kamran well short of his ground for 17 runs.
Younis Kham was caught in the deep from Nathan McCullum's bowling for 21 while Misbah was caught by Jacob Oram diving forward at backward square leg for 25 from 44 balls from Styris' bowling.
But the big wicket was the dangerous Afridi's, caught at long-on by Martin Guptill for 24 from 20 balls, from Oram's bowling.
Umar Akmal resorted to running singles with the lower-order but met his match when Brendon McCullum hit the stumps with an underarm throw when he had scored 32 from 32 balls.
Mills finished with 2-42 from his 10 overs while McCullum took 1-40 from 10 while Jacob Oram claimed 2-49 with a wicket from the last ball of the innings.
Taylor was captaining the side in Daniel Vettori's absence after his tweaked hamstring was not recovered enough to allow him to start. Kane Williamson also made way for Jesse Ryder.
