So how does a Kiwi fashion designer achieve success in the UK market?
After all, with a New Zealand company that is now 20 years old it certainly must mean that there is a very robust platform of business here in New Zealand from which to do business. But at the end of the day, does the world really need another designer label? And if I believe it does, then how the hell do I get myself noticed on a global stage?
To trade in New Zealand is to trade in a niche market and therefore, it is very easy to gain a profile for the brand and myself.
Over the last twenty years I have developed not only a strong voice around the collection but also on business capability, philanthropic endeavors and empowering and assisting small business; especially in the creative fields.
Success for us globally has been about product differentiation and we have created a point of difference in a market that is riddled with same!!
This difference is the Chameleon wrap dress. Yep, it's just a dress but it bucks all trends as it is one-size-fits-all, not at all fashion forward (in fact, it's anti-fashion), it is machine washable and crushes up into a small bag, it is able to achieve at least ten different looks so is the perfect dress for travelling, and girls, it gets rid of your fat days forever! Show me another dress that can do all this!
With this incredibly capable frock we have been tackling consumer expos around the world with mixed success at this stage but enough traction to know that we are increasing demand and recognition for the Annah Stretton Chameleon, globally. I mean, Sir Edmund Hillary did not climb that mountain the first time and nor have we, so to speak but where preparation and persistence meet, the end result is always success.
We know the dress works as it has become a large slice of our turnover in Australasia through a retail and an expo platform. Our goal now is to break into markets that have similar demographics so this has to be the UK and USA and working with a widget, so to speak, truly does give us that point of difference that is so vital to enable effective entry into global markets.
